Children With Three Parents May Be The Next Step In In-Vitro Fertilization

Posted: Updated:

A new study published by the University Of North Carolina has looked into the prospect of designer babies, babies who are genetically altered to eradicate birth defects and ensure that certain successful genes are present.

With the increasing viability of genetic manipulation, The Food and Drug Administration, or FDA, is holding a two day fact-finding symposium about controversial technology that would manipulate genetic material. Imagine the ability to create children with not two, but three, genetic parents.

While the concept may initially sound like a catastrophe worthy of an episode of Maury, the Journal of Medicine and Philosophy has already discussed the positive outcomes of a scientific breakthrough like this.

By breeding three healthy parents, experts say that the technology could lead to the reduction of mitochondria abnormalities and other genetic risks that are usually passed along to children.

"If you can take a piece of that part of the DNA that's damaged and replace it with a new part, if you will, that comes from another human, this is something that could really change the whole view of diseases in the future," said Dr. Manny Alvarez, the Senior Managing Editor of FOX NEWSHEALTH.COM.
