Before moving to Charlotte to be part of the My Fox Carolinas family, I was a meteorologist and weather producer for CNN, CNNi and HLN in Atlanta. I forecasted for and covered all major weather events in 2013, including the deadly tornado season, Typhoon Haiyan and the flooding in Colorado. I grew up in Atlanta and found my love of weather at the early age of eight.

It’s officially summer and with the warmer weather, we are all ready to head outdoors. North Carolina sees an average of 40 to 50 thunderstorm days per year. More than 300 people are struck by lightning each year in the United States.

Sitting just a few chairs apart were a long time blood donor and a first time blood donor. Mike Zeller has been donating blood since he was seventeen; Jose Marte had never given blood before. But afterwards they both had the same message: Giving blood is easy, doesn’t take up too much of your time and that anybody can give blood.

“It’s one of the easiest things to do," Zeller said. "It is painless. It takes a little bit of time and you get some nice snacks afterward which is always good. Who doesn’t like a nice snack?”

At the American Red Cross Charlotte Donor Center, you get not only nice snacks, but great people who treat you well.

Marte had a good first experience giving blood.

“They treat you good here," he said. " If I did it anybody can do it.”

One trip to the American Red Cross can save three lives. That’s a powerful thought. And once again, anybody can do it. Mike and Jose’s donation means even more due to the blood shortage that the American Red Cross is experiencing. The snow may have been pretty, but across the country, the winter weather crippled the blood supply. Just in Charlotte alone, almost 30 blood drives werecanceledd. That resulted in a shortage of over 900 units.

Now the American Red Cross is working overtime to make up the deficit and they need you to donate now more than ever. Giving blood is even easier in the Charlotte area. You can donate and ride in style. How you ask? There’s an app for that. And it’s called “UBER.”

David Salsone of UBER says, “UBER is a technology company started in San Francisco. Essentially what we do is connect people who need rides with people who are offering their cars.”

They heard about the blood shortage on the news and decided to use their technology to give back to the Charlotte community. “We contacted the Red Cross and decided to do a program called ‘Save Lives with Free Rides’. And that’s what we’re doing here this week, well for the rest of the week in Charlotte.”

So download their app and go give blood in and around the Charlotte area. The Charlotte Donor Center is extending their hours through February 28th to accommodate all schedules for those who want to donate and UBER will be giving rides through the 28th, for free.

Please take a moment and help restock the blood supply. With UBER, you don’t even have to worry about how to get there, just worry about which snack you’ll choose when you’re done. And smile, because you helped save a life.
