Dale Earnhardt, Jr Wins Daytona 500

Posted: Updated:
Daytona Beach, FL - Dale Earnhardt, Jr. was in Victory Lane at the Daytona 500 for the second time in his career. Even his father could never claim that honor.

The 88 car held off a late charge from Denny Hamlin to claim the 500, in Earnhardt's first win since June 17, 2012. Earnhardt had previously won at Daytona in 2004.

A race that featured 7 caution flags -- including the final one concurrent with the checkered flag -- was littered with big crashes, after being delayed for 6 hours and 22 minutes due to rain.

With the win, Earnhardt, Jr. is essentially qualified for the Sprint Cup Chase.
