More than 2,000 people lined up to get a job at a fair in Uptown Saturday.

And with more than 100 employers, those lines were packed.

With unemployment rates going down, we wanted to find out what city leaders are doing to bring jobs to the area.

“It is very hard to get a job,” said Renita Purefoy.

Long lines in Uptown Charlotte almost remind you of holiday bargain hunters – but these men and women weren’t in the mood for a discount, they came to get hired.

“I’ve been interviewed on the spot a couple of times already,” said Renita Purefoy.

“You can’t come in with a negative attitude. You have to project positivity,” said Michael Grettsinger.

Michael Grettsinger hasn’t taken home a paycheck for the last 5 months. “Me personally with multiple backgrounds with logistics, multiple, radio/TV. It pays to be a multi-tasker,” said Grettsinger.

Beefing up your book smarts could help you find work faster.

“People who have college degrees get put in a job first,” said Purefoy.

Education is the key – you can’t just stop at a GED or a high school diploma. There’s a booth looking for people with Bachelors and Masters and they say not many people have them.

With thousands of folks trying to snag a job at the fair, we wanted to find out how you stand out from the crowd. Some recruiters say to dress the part, have a resume that’s easy to read, and do some research on the company to market yourself so to let them know you’re the best candidate for the position.

“I don’t want to come across as arrogant or cocky but you have to be proud of your skills,” said Grettsinger.

“We have seen the unemployment numbers be as high as 10%. Now they are at 6%. That’s still high – I’ve seen it as high as 3 or 4%,” said Mayor Patrick Cannon.

The Mayor’s sponsored job fair brought lots of potential recruiters. He says city leaders are also eyeing companies in the energy, healthcare and construction sectors.

“One thing we want to focus on is international business to help create jobs and expand our tax base,” said Cannon.
