If you're looking for a sign in Lincoln County, there's a chance you won't see one.

The county is experiencing a rash of road sign thefts. Last year, the county experienced 200 missing signs. This year so far, there are 50 signs nowhere to be found. Just last week, 13 signs were no longer at their location.


Planning and Inspections Director for the county, Andrew Bryant, says his team responds to the missing signs immediately. The labor isn't the hard part. It also affects taxpayer dollars. "We have budgeted about 18 thousand dollars to replace signs last year and by March of that year, we're already dipping into other funds to supplement that. Ultimately, it was 21 thousand dollars cost for the county," he said.

The county says people are stealing it for novelty or recycling it for scrap metal, but each sign is a set back for emergency situations.

"When that police or fire truck has to go back to a street that they've missed, that's precious seconds that could be used to save someone's life," Bryant said.

People in the community are encouraged to return all signs, no questions asked.
