A new license plate in Georgia is creating controversy.

State officials have approved a special license plate featuring the confederate flag. The Georgia division of the Sons of Confederate Veterans requested the new design. It costs 80 dollars total, according to the Georgia Department of Revenue.

"Show your support for Southern Heritage and order the SCV plate for your vehicles," The Georgia SCV writes on their site.

Civil rights groups are outraged, saying the flag is racially charged. However, Georgia's governor says he is surprised by all the controversy.

"I think it is an acknowledgment of the history of our state and our culture. It has been there, it's just a little bit different format but the actual symbol of the flag has been on a specialty license plate for a number of years," said Nathan Deal.

The group that asked for the new license plates says they meant no offense by the design.

They say they just want to commemorate their heritage.

However, The Southern Christian Leadership Conference spokesman Maynard Eaton tells The Atlanta Journal-Constitution the state shouldn't have sanctioned the move and calls displaying the emblem "reprehensible."
