MORGANTON, NC - A local brewer is looking more like a college basketball team these days. Catawba Brewing Company's Firewater IPA is getting a lot of attention.

“Firewater in general is more of an English style or east coast style IPA, where it’s a little maltier and sweeter,” said Kevin Sondey, who works for the brewery. “It’s about six percent alcohol so you can still have a couple of them without worrying too much.”

Firewater is a 15-year old Burke County brewer located in downtown Morganton. The company was invited by Blue Ridge Outdoors magazine invited Catawba Brewing to participate in Microbrew Madness, an NCAA playoff style, five round bracketed competition where beer lovers vote on their favorite bands.

“We’re a Western North Carolina brewery and we feel really privileged that they came out and asked us to participate in it,” said Scott Pyatt, owner. “We were asked participate based on our work in the community and things.”

Sondey commented, “It gives us exposure and they’re a lot of fun to participate in. I really like these people choice competitions because we have fun with them.”

The Firewater IPA has already made it to round two and Catawba Brewing is counting on beer lovers to push them towards a big win.

“It’s left up to the people to vote for us,” said Pyatt. “You’ve gotta go online. You can vote one time per day, per device. So, if you have a smart phone and a laptop you can vote twice a day.

“Vote for us and vote for some of the other breweries out of North Carolina that are in the competition also. But, really, I want them to vote for me first.”
