Sea Life Aquarium Opens In Concord

Posted: Updated:

The Sea Life Aquarium at Concord Mills is now open for business. Area leaders held a ribbon cutting Thursday morning, and the first guests made their way through a maze of exhibits featuring stingrays, sharks and an octopus.

Avery Garmon is 9 years old and lives in Concord. She says, “If I could, I’d come every day (to the aquarium).” Garmon adds, “I just think it’s really cool because the sharks and the stingrays, they can swim all around you. And you can see them over your head and everything.”

The aquarium is the first of its kind in the Charlotte region and is expected to be a big draw for tourists and area schools. The location at Concord Mills, in the mall and near the Charlotte Motor Speedway, is expected to generate visitors from near and far and cement the area as a tourist destination along Interstate 85. During the grand opening even, Patrick Coughline, CEO of the Cabarrus Regional Chamber of Commerce, spoke to the crowd. He said, “I want to tell you how important this facility is as we are out helping sell and promote Cabarrus County as a great place to do business.”

Current ticket prices for admission to the aquarium are $17 for children and $21 for adults. Children age 2 and under get in free. Because of the large volume of visitors expected in the first few weeks following Thursday's opening, officials are encouraging guests to buy tickets online before coming to the aquarium.
