Philadelphia Among Cities With Highest Tax Burdens, Study Says

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

Tax season is upon us and Philadelphia is among the top five cities with the highest tax rates across the country.

The tax burden for Philadelphia families on all income levels is extremely high. But it's the poorest of those that the higher tax rate hits the hardest.

Philadelphia ranks number two on the list. A family earning $25,000 pays close to 4,000 in taxes. It's higher than what any other low level earners nationwide have to pay. Furthermore, families in Philadelphia earning 150,000 a year end up owing Uncle Sam about $25,000 in taxes.

Here are the top five cities with the highest tax burden:

  1. Bridgeport, Connecticut
  2. Philadelphia, Pa.
  3. Milwaukee, Wisconsin
  4. Baltimore, Maryland
  5. Columbus, Ohio

Wilmington, Delaware is number 10 on the list.

This report was released by the Office of Revenue Analysis of the government of the District of Columbia. To make these rankings, estimated property taxes, sales taxes, auto and income taxes were analyzed. The largest city in each state was analyzed.
