Chester Fire Chiefs Ask SC Attorney General To Investigate Sheriff

Posted: Updated:
Chester, South Carolina doesn't have a lot of traffic, and it doesn't have a lot of drama…until now.

A fight between three friends is making big headlines.

“It was surprising to me,” said one resident. “This is a quiet town.”

But these friends aren't just your average Chester folks – they are the sheriff, a fire chief and his brother, accused of fighting at the scene of a wreck.

It’s the reason the chiefs from all 12 of Chester county’s volunteer fire departments held an emergency, closed door meeting Wednesday night.

“The fire chiefs voted unanimously tonight to ask the Attorney General of the state of South Carolina to conduct an investigation on the sheriff of Chester County for the incident on highway number nine,” said Richburg Fire Chief John Agee. “The Fire Chief Association stands solidly behind the fire chief and his brother, Tommy.”

Here’s how the police report said it all unfolded: deputies arrived at the scene of a wreck Friday night and then left, even though the firefighters asked them to block off the road.

Police say West Chester Fire Chief Andy Martin began making comments into the emergency radio about the upcoming sheriffs election in 2014. Police say when Sheriff Alex Underwood arrived on the scene, the incident escalated into a fight.

Both Martin brothers were arrested at their homes Saturday, more than 24 hours after the incident. They were released Sunday on personal recognizance bonds

Sheriff Underwood said in a statement he wanted to be invited to tonight's meeting, but Agee said only members of the organization were invited to come.

Chief Andy Martin refused to comment.
