Carolina On His Mind

Posted: Updated:
Singer, songwriter and North Carolina native James Taylor, has been enlisted in a campaign to get North Carolinians to pay attention to fracking - the procedure of creating fractures on rocks and rock formations by injecting fluid into cracks to force them to open further.

The purpose of this procedure is to allow more oil and gas to flow out for extraction.

Many North Carolina lawmakers are in support of this procedure and, according to the National Resource Defense Council, have directed the North Carolina Mining and Energy Commission to approve rules that would allow fracking companies to keep some of the chemicals they pump into the ground secret.

"The commission is paving the way to let these companies frack under North Carolinians' property whether they want it or not," claims the NRDC.

James Taylor will address the issue in several television ads slated to air this week.

“Big oil and gas are pushing the governor and the legislature to allow reckless fracking,” says Taylor.

Taylor goes on to list the pitfalls of fracking and says that what happens next is up to North Carolinians.

“Fracking is dirty and it’s dangerous,” Taylor says. “It can poison drinking water, and chemicals in fracking fluid are known to cause cancer.”

Research on the effects of fracking has not been clear cut, and proponents say the procedure causes no harm to the environment.
