Protesters stood outside of the Rowan County Courthouse to protest against the use of gas chambers to euthanize animals.

Jonathan Leach says animal rights is human rights.

“I personally feel like anything that Hitler used to mass genocide people shouldn’t be used by us for anything,” Leach said.

They lined up with candles, posters and heavy hearts, advocating for the many helpless animals that get euthanized with the gas chamber.

Polly Anderson showed up with pictures of her cat which was abused at an animal shelter where she found her furry friend in a pool of blood.

“It’s very depressing for one thing. I feel like this day in age, there should be a better way to euthanize animals which there is,” she said.

The protesters are suggesting the use of lethal injection instead. Animal control believes that could put workers in harms way if the animal fights back.

Rowan County is one of 11 counties in North Carolina that uses the gas chamber to euthanize animals. Protesters in Salisbury say they’ll keep coming back until they see the change they want in their community.
