19-Year-Old Beaten To Death In Trenton

TRENTON, N.J. -

A 19-year old young man was viciously beaten in Trenton, New Jersey and investigators are looking for those responsible.

Prosecutors said this appears to be a random robbery.

The suspects got away with nothing, and left Julio Lopez-Cruz to die in front of his home.

"Julio was one of the best guys. He was very nice and friendly and a very good friend," friend Christian Lopez said.

Julio Lopez-Cruz came to America to support his poverty stricken family in Guatemala.

The 19-year-old had been working at a car wash in Trenton since moving here just 40 days ago.

His death left those on his block stunned.

"He was a nice kid. He didn't mess with nobody. He didn't mess with nobody," said multiple neighbors.

Investigators said he was chased by two men while he walked home from the grocery store Saturday evening.

They said Lopez-Cruz tried to get inside his home on Rusling Street, knocking on his window for help.

During a struggle, prosecutors said the two men threw Lopez-Cruz to the ground.

"It seems like it's a street robbery. It doesn't appear that Mr. Lopez-Cruz had any enemies and its ones of those really tragic situations that can happen," Mercer County Assistant Prosecutor Jim Scott said.

Scott said both suspects ran off in different directions while friends tended to Lopez-Cruz.

He said the Guatemalan native badly hurt his head and eventually died at the hospital.

His neighbors started raising money for their murdered friend over the weekend.

They want the suspects to come forward.

"They don't have any idea what they're doing, why they're trying to steal anything, why they don't ask first. Just don't kill people like for nothing. Don't kill people for a dollar. A life does not cost a dollar and the damage to the family is very tremendous," Lopez said.
