Pa. Turnpike Drivers Concerned About Roads Ahead Of Next Storm

Posted: Updated:
SOUTHAMPTON, Pa. -

Friday morning's Pennsylvania Turnpike accident has drivers worried about road conditions in bad weather.

"It was a little slick. It was ice," said Christopher Martin. He and Hans Krown are describing the conditions on the turnpike Friday morning.

"It was slushy but you could see the black ice on it," said Krown.

They were in the massive pileups and backups for seven hours.

"That sun was coming straight down in your eyes. It was a glare coming off of it and people were speeding and not seeing that," said Krown. Both men were working and riding in a trash collection truck when they got trapped in the backups. After what they saw they're concerned about people getting back on the road Saturday when bad weather returns.

"Yeah cause people drive like idiots. I it's this weather. We drive careful because of other people who don't know what they're doing," said the men.

Janet Martin is afraid to drive now. She's unsure of road conditions.

"I'm not going. I'm afraid to drive when it's too bad," she said.

Pennsylvania State Police released a report Friday evening stating the initial cause of the crash is still under investigation.

But the report also states heavy winds, drifting snow, patches of ice and drivers going too fast for conditions possibly contributed to it.

The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission, which controls the road, urges drivers to adjust speeds to whatever the driving conditions are. A spokesperson would not give details about whether its maintenance crews will perform any road treatments Friday night but said they are on duty around the clock.

As for other roads, PennDot says 290 trucks would hit the roads between 3 and 4 a.m. Saturday to begin salting. They will plow as needed. Snow is expected mid-morning.
