Rock Hill Warming Center Open

Posted: Updated:

A blanket of fresh snow covered the ground in Rock Hill. No tired tracks, no footprints...except for a few leading up to the steps of the Salvation Army Warming Center.

“If I was out there, I would have nowhere else to go,” said Mary Jackson, who is staying at the Warming Center today.

The Salvation Army Center for Women and Children has a Warming Center that is normally just reserved for evenings. Women and children can bathe, eat and sleep. But from today until Friday, it’s open all day to keep the women and children out of the cold.

“A lot of places that the homeless population goes to, like libraries, are closed so they would have nowhere else to go,” said Salvation Army Christian Youth Director Carrie McCall.

The center has 12 beds, a kitchen, laundry machine and couches where the women can relax and watch TV. But most importantly, it has heat.

The Warming Center comes on a first come, first serve basis. It is located at 119 South Charlotte Avenue in Rock Hill.
