Salisbury High Students Dealing With Shooting Aftermath

Posted: Updated:
Salisbury, NC -

Security was heightened at Salisbury High School Tuesday, one day after there was a shooting at the school outside the gym.

Salisbury High student Eric Gibson says the shooting of 16 year-old Shaleek Williams was one of those things you don't expect to happen.

"He's real good in basketball, so whenever a lot of us found out about that, we was more or less hurt," he said. "Everybody's cool with Shaleek, so we were like how could something like that happen to Shaleek? So it was just sad for most of us."

Gibson's cousin, 17 year old Dajuan Russell is the accused shooter.

"You don't ever want to see one of your family members put through a situation like that," he said.

Police aren't saying much about what led up to the shooting. Russell was in court today. His bond is set $1 million dollars. If he's found guilty, he faces up to a quarter century in prison.

Shenita Russell, Dajuan's aunt, said she's hurt by the situation.

"That's my baby. That's my son, and I have raised him since he was like six years old, so it's very hurtful," she said. "It's very hurtful, because he's not even equipped for that. He's not even equipped to be out here on the streets."

"I kinda just wish the whole thing just didn't happen," Gibson said. He says students' thoughts are with Shaleek and his recovery. "We just kinda want him to get back to school."
