Tim Wright is the owner of American Tactical & Pawn. He makes a living by putting guns in people's hands.

But kids? That's a different story. And Wright sees gun owners making excuses all the time.

A shooting incident that left a seventeen month-old wounded in Shelby last week has put the issue of gun control front and center.

Shelby Police Lieutenant Tim Walker says gun owners need to understand the responsibility they have taken on.

“Anybody that owns a gun should keep it locked up and protected from those who don't," he said.

Shelby Police have taken gun safety into their own hands. Residents can swing by the police department and pick up a free lock. It's a cable lock, which means you have to remove any ammunition in order to secure the weapon.

Walker recommends a fingerprint activated safe.

There are other, less expensive safes, and wright sells every gun with a locking mechanism… saying "safety" is something worth investing in.

Both men advise telling your children about the guns in your home at young age... To take out the element of mystery.

They agree that a child needs to know what could happen if a gun is fired.

After all, even the smallest fingers can pull a trigger.
