Michael Sam likely to become NFL's first openly gay player
Mizzou Linebacker Comes Out as Gay
By Mike Leslie, Sports Anchor/Digital Journalist - email
Missouri linebacker Michael Sam has told the New York Times and ESPN that he is gay. The Co-Defensive Player of the Year in the SEC is set to be a part of this spring's NFL Draft, meaning Sam will almost assuredly become the league's first openly gay player.
Sam said he told his teammates at Mizzou back in August, and that they were supportive. He said that many of his teammates shook their head, "like, finally, he came out."
Sam tallied three games in the 2013 season in which he had three sacks -- against Arkansas State, Vanderbilt, and Florida. He is projected to go as high as the third or fourth round in May's NFL Draft.
