Roads reopened after massive water main break in Detroit

(WJBK) -

The roads have been reopened following massive street flooding caused by a water main break on Detroit's east side Friday morning. The flooding left several vehicles stuck in water and ice, prompting a rescue using construction equipment. As much as two feet of water covered the street for a quarter mile.

The water main break happened around 5 a.m. near the area of Gratiot Avenue and Connor Street. Temperatures at the time were around zero degrees with wind chill readings near 20 degrees below zero.

Firefighters responded to help free motorists from the waters. Crews used a front-end loader to carry at least three stranded motorists. They also worked to clear ice and water from the area.

FOX 2's Robin Schwartz reports the city has more than three thousand miles of water mains. Through this harsh winter about 40 to 50 breaks or leaks per day have occurred, but many are underground so they don't cause much street damage.

The city says this latest break was a complicated bone, and they're looking into whether more could have been done to warn drivers.
