How will the snow melt affect the environment?

Metro Detroit's record 67.9 inches of snow and counting has to melt some time, and when it does, what effects will it have on the environment?

Flooding is, obviously, to be expected.

Michelle Arquette-Palermo with the Clinton River Watershed Council says flooding in Macomb County will likely be greater because the soil is clay-based, which means it is thick and hard-packed so water has trouble percolating.

She and FOX 2's Robin Schwartz checked out the Clinton River on Thursday at Dodge Park. That spot has a history of flooding in a typical year. The river is frozen solid now with ice several inches thick.

"We're going to have a lot more erosion along the river. We'll probably have trees, as you can see behind me, there's a lot of trees along this river bank, and when that water level rises, and it takes trees down with it," says Arquette-Palermo.

She says another thing to consider is the pollution from all the salt on the roads and sidewalks. That's all going to end up in our rivers and lakes, so use it sparingly.
