NASCAR and Sprint To Install EV Chargers At Work

Posted: Updated:

You may have seen these things that look like gas pumps around Uptown and wondered what they do.

They are electric vehicle charging stations.

After an announcement made by NASCAR and Sprint Thursday, you will be seeing more of them around Charlotte.

“This is catching on and we’re happy to be a part of it,” said NASCAR Vice President of Green Innovation, Dr. Mike Lynch.

The US Department of Energy, NASCAR and Sprint joined forces at NASCAR Plaza Thursday morning to officially kick-off their cooperation with the “EV Everywhere Workplace Charging Challenge.”

“In taking on the DOE’s work place challenge, NASCAR and Sprint join more than 50 other great American companies in making a corporate commitment, giving their employees the ability to charge their vehicles at work,” said Assistant Secretary of Energy Efficient and Renewable Energy at the Department of Energy, Dr. David Danielson.

The Department of Energy has challenged companies to provide electric charging stations at work for their employees. NASCAR and Sprint join 3M, Coca-Cola Company, Ford Motor Company and General Motors in providing the charging stations at work.

NASCAR unveiled five EV charging stations, which are privately funded, at its Charlotte location. Sprint will install the stations in each of their 14 parking garages at their headquarters in Kansas.

“This is our ability to meet our employees where they are when they are making a conscious decision on their own to take a greener lifestyle, “ said Sprint Director of Environmental Initiatives, Darren Beck.

The number of electric vehicles has doubles in Mecklenburg County and has grown to 40,000 nationwide.
