LITHONIA, Ga. -

Deputies trying to serve a murder warrant, end up having to shoot the suspect after he opens fire on them with a sawed-off shotgun near New Birth Missionary Baptist Church on Wednesday.

DeKalb County Sheriff Thomas Brown tells FOX 5 News that 22-year-old Nicholas Clarence Wade is a suspect in the stabbing death of an 18-month-old girl. Deputies were tracking Wade to serve him an arrest warrant in the case. They ended up near the parking lot of New Birth located at 6400 Woodrow Road in Lithonia around 4 p.m. Wednesday.

Sheriff Brown says Wade pointed a sawed-off shotgun at himself and then at deputies. He was able to get off a round before deputies opened fire. Wade was struck in the leg, neck and face.

Wade was transported to the detention wing at Grady Memorial Hospital in stable condition. Once released, he will be taken to the DeKalb County Jail.

According to jail record, has been arrested multiple times with the latest being back in November of 2013.

Sheriff Brown clarified that the incident had nothing to do with New Birth and they don't believe Wade is a member at the church. They are not sure why he ended up at the location, but believe he may have spotted the undercover vehicles tracking him prior to the incident.

There were three girls in the SUV traveling with Wade. They appear okay, but are being checked out for any possible injuries.

Sheriff Brown says both the incident today as well as the stabbing death of the 18-month-old girl are still under investigation, but promised to release more information later Wednesday.

School was in-session at New Birth Christian Academy, but deputies say that the students were no in any immediate danger from the incident.
