I am a Digital Journalist based in Hickory. I cover Alexander, Burke, Caldwell, Catawba, Iredell and Watauga counties. I was born in Weaverville, NC. My high school dream was to be a White House correspondent, then college happened and I got involved with the radio station at Western Carolina University.

Jeff Gordon captured his fifth victory in the Brickyard 400 today at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. His name will go down in history as the winningest NASCAR driver at the Indiana track. But, he is not the only multiple champion.

Last year, Ryan Newman won the Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. As you can imagine, the team was excited and proud of the accomplishment. That was certainly true for Catawba County’s Jason Jarrett.

HICKORY—The City of Hickory has a lot of projects on its plate, and they are all in the name of economic development. Work is in progress at the Crawdads stadium and another project is planned for Geitner-Rotary Park.

Now, an urban greenway is being proposed to connect Lenoir-Rhyne University with Union Square downtown. The price for this new project is nearly $27.5 Million.

"All of these projects for Inspiring spaces are going to have a price tag and all of these projects are tied back to economic development,” said Andrea Surratt, Asst. Town Manager, Hickory. “So, it's about changing the landscape of Hickory so that you have more opportunity for more growth."

The greenway will include paths on both sides of the railroad tracks along Main Ave, and will feature park spaces and a pedestrian bridge.

How will Hickory pay for the project?

"I think that, potentially, it might be an issue put before the voters in the form of a bond referendum,” said Brad Lail, Hickory City Council. “I think the case to be made is that this project is not about creating more park space, it's about economic development. It's about innovating the region, creating jobs, increasing the population. It's about restoring Hickory."
