Before moving to Charlotte to be part of the My Fox Carolinas family, I was a meteorologist and weather producer for CNN, CNNi and HLN in Atlanta. I forecasted for and covered all major weather events in 2013, including the deadly tornado season, Typhoon Haiyan and the flooding in Colorado. I grew up in Atlanta and found my love of weather at the early age of eight.

It’s officially summer and with the warmer weather, we are all ready to head outdoors. North Carolina sees an average of 40 to 50 thunderstorm days per year. More than 300 people are struck by lightning each year in the United States.

We’re just a few weeks away from the Daytona 500 and the start of the 2014 NASCAR season. On February 1st , NASCAR honored its fans with “Fan Appreciation Day” at the NASCAR Hall of Fame. The day was filled with question and answer sessions with the drivers and legends of NASCAR, exhibits, simulators, and for those who signed up in time, autograph sessions with the drivers.

Among the vast crowd, we found NASCAR’s biggest “little” fan and walking NASCAR encyclopedia, four year old Tyler Keefer. Tyler and his dad, Ryan, made the trip down to meet Dale Earnhardt, Jr., the sport’s most popular driver and one of their favorite racers.

Events like Fan Appreciation Day allow people just like Ryan and Tyler to bond and make memories around the sport they have both come to know and love. “Every time we’ve done any kind of NASCAR event it’s been a bonding thing for at least Tyler and I if not our whole family” Ryan said. “It’s really cool.”

The future of NASCAR is in the hands of children like Tyler, who will look back and remember these special moments and grow to be even bigger fans. That’s a tradition that will live long past the last lap at Daytona.
