Longboarding Catching On In North Carolina

Posted: Updated:
Super-Bowl Sunday? More like Longboard Sunday for one group of thrill-seekers.

The International Distance Skateboarding Association hosts longboarding events throughout the United States. The group made their first trek to North Carolina by hosting one-mile, 5K and 10K events this weekend in Concord.

Longboards are just what the name looks like – long skateboards. While their size prevents tricks to be as easily performed as a skateboard, they are faster, more agile and the perfect board for an endurance workout.

Jonathan Strauss founded IDSA in 2010 and is hoping to one day host a marathon-longboarding event at Lowe’s Motor Speedway. For now, he is taking a grassroots approach to building a following of longboarders – and wanted to show Concord/Charlotte (home to Lowe’s Motor Speedway) a different type of racing to enjoy.

“It’s where racing lives so we put together the concept,” Strauss said.

Twenty-five people competed – some traveling from as far as Germany, Texas, Florida – and there were even a few locals rolling around.

While longboarding hasn’t gained the popularity of regular skateboarding, snowboarding, etc., the group hosts events throughout the country and it is not uncommon to see hundreds, even thousands come out in cities like New York and Orlando.

“It starts off like this and before you know it you have hundreds of thousands of people coming out,” world-record holder in the mile Kasper Heinrici said. “…Get out and ride and keep up the stoke.”
