City and College Partner to Create Manufacturing Jobs

Posted: Updated:
Hickory, NC - Conover was once home to more than 200 manufacturing companies. Now, a partnership with Catawba Valley Community College, is helping the area progress in the form of the Manufacturing Solutions Center (MSC)

“Though our name is not synonymous with traditional manufacturing,” said Donald Duncan, Conover City Manager. “We are moving into advance manufacturing now, such as rapid prototyping, injection mold and plastics and things like that.”

The MSC is housed in a former Broyhill facility and is used by companies for design and research and development.

“We test everything from furniture to grill brushes,” said Dan St Louis, MSC Director. “We do a lot of textile testing a lot of furniture testing. But you don’t know what’s going to come in the door next. Manufacturing Solutions Center, that’s why we named it that way. Because we’re here about trying to solve problems and help create jobs. Because at the end of the day, it’s all about jobs.”

Donald Duncan commented, “This facility has outreach to over 35 different countries. We worked in 48 states last year and worked with 1100 different companies in 2013. It’s not just jobs here, it’s jobs all over the world. Our goal is to rise the entire tide.”
