Goodwill finds $43K in donated bathrobe pocket, returns money to family

(WJBK) -

The Goodwill branch in Monroe, Mich. received a donated bag of clothes. When employees were going through the items they found $43,000 stashed in the pockets of a bathrobe.

"There was this blue, terrycloth bathrobe, a gentleman's robe. I brought it up to sort it and I noticed something down in one of the pockets, so I grabbed it out just figuring it was probably garbage. Lo and behold, I opened up the envelope and there was bands of hundred dollar bills in it," says employee Tyler.

He and a fellow employee, Laura, had discovered a total of $43,000 in two different pockets.

"I couldn't believe it. I was astonished. I just froze and I was immediately nervous because I'm like, somebody's looking for this or they don't even know it's gone, and I've got somebody's savings here that doesn't even know it," Tyler says.

Tyler immediately called his boss and the police. Tyler says the officer came with a little ziplock bag expecting to collect a few hundred dollars, but when the officer learned it was in the tens of thousands of dollars the officer contacted his boss.

Luckily for the family that donated the clothes, some ID mixed in with the money so they got it back.

"When people make donations at the door here, that's Goodwill's property ... and it's my job to make sure that we handle all that stuff with respect. I just had to make sure the money had to go back to who it belonged to," Tyler says.
