Peter Grimaldi is in charge of the plants on the Daniel Stowe Botanical Gardens' 400 acres. He says placement is key to keeping plants alive.

Those "sensitive" plants - and that's most of them - are kept in greenhouses like this. The species planted outside are kept warm just like people, with blankets.

“Depending on the weight of the fabric you get about two degrees per layer,” he says.

And that white color isn't a fashion statement.

“White in color is important because if it’s something you want to leave on through the course of the day it won't absorb the heat of the sun and kind of spike in the day time. That fluctuation in temperature can also be detrimental to the plants,” said Grimaldi.

But believe it or not, the snow is actually good for plants.  It acts as an insulating layer to the wind and the wind chill.

The best thing you can do for your plants at home is water them. It better prepares them to weather the elements.

The gardens will be closed tomorrow as they operate on the same schedule as Gaston County Schools.
