Fifth Street Shelter Ministries in Statesville is doing what it can to help those in need. Executive director Patti West says the face of homelessness has changed over the years because of the economy, but she’s glad this place is here to provide them help, especially during the cold weather.

“It’s impossible for somebody to pull themselves up by their own boot straps. It’s physically impossible. We’ve all had help. We’ve all had lots of help along the way. Some of us have been fortunate to have that help surrounding us without even asking,” she said.

West says the change in weather may make it harder for those in need to survive, but Fifth Street Shelter Ministries has its doors open 24/7, operating as a crisis agency.
