DeKalb Co. Schools releases app

Posted: Updated:
DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. -

Smart phones just got a lot smarter for DeKalb County parents.

The school district has launched an app where you can get any and all information about to your child in one place.

The school district is the first in Georgia to launch an app.

The app allows you to choose which school or schools in the district you would like to follow. Parent Doug Dakin says that's his favorite feature of the app, that you can focus on a specific school, rather than get general information about the whole county.

With the app you can:

  • access your child's lunch menu
  • get updates of scores of athletic events
  • access the email addresses of your child's teachers
  • access the school calendar
  • get alerts on school delays / cancellations
  • get alerts on school emergencies
  • get alerts if your child's grade drops below a certain percentage
  • get alerts if your child is late to school

Officials say it's a one stop shop, where you can obtain all the information you need to know about your child, in one location.

Gary Brantley helped develop the app. He says the district wanted to bridge the gap between schools and parents. Brantley says the app is secure so that no one else can access your child's sensitive information (like grades) but you.

Some of the features the app highlights are still being developed and more features will roll out as the app evolves.

The app was beta tested for 6 months before launch, and was introduced on January 6th. So far, it has been downloaded more than 700 times.

Brantley says the app cost $70,000 to develop.

"For the amount of communication that it's actually going to provide and the engagement that it's going to provide for parents, I think it's a very minimal cost for 100,000 students", says Brantley.
