The new Sea Life Aquarium at Concord Mills is hiring. This weekend there is a job fair to fill 40 positions at the aquarium. The job fair will take place on Saturday, Jan .18 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Sunday, Jan.19, from noon to 6 p.m. at the Great Wolf Lodge Conference Center at 10175 Weddington Road in Concord.
The aquarium jobs announcement is the latest for Cabarrus County, where officials are hoping to bring in new industry and expand existing businesses.
Steven Melvin says he got laid off from a job as a mechanic just before the holidays.
“It's hard, to say the least, trying to figure out a way to make ends meet without overextending yourself one way or the other, not knowing where the next paycheck will come, or if there will be a next paycheck. It's a struggle daily,” said Melvin
The good news is the unemployment rate has gone down recently in several area counties, including Cabarrus and Mecklenburg. To keep it that way, the Cabarrus Regional Chamber of Commerce is trying to help business owners scout for buildings in the county that would suit their needs. Margie Bukowski, Senior Vice President for the Cabarrus Economic Development Corporation, says, “A lot of the opportunities that we get, the clients want the building to be ready to move into, or they'll up fit it, and they want to move in in six months, and there weren't any large scale buildings in the area.” That will soon change. The Silverman Group plans to build two spec buildings on Derita Road in Concord.
The other draw to bring business to the area is how close it is to a major interstate, a regional airport, and rail sites. Bukowski says, “That's why we're really targeting transportation companies and distribution because we are sitting right in the middle. A lot of places don't have this great thing.” Those are the resources the Chamber hopes will drive business to the area and help people like Melvin find work and make a living. Melvin says, “I’ve got to keep a positive attitude toward the situation because if I get down on myself, nothing positive will ever come from that.”
