The Charlotte Mecklenburg Animal Care and Control is holding the Nylabowl, an online voting campaign to see which toy dogs prefer more, tennis balls or nylabones.
The animal shelter is jointly holding a promotion for donations of these favorite toys and adoption of pit bulls. If you donate six tennis balls, you can adopt a pit bull for $15; if you donate a nylabone, the fee is $10.
Melissa Knicely, who works for Animal Care and Control, says pit bulls are in high numbers at the shelter.
“They’re a really popular breed,” she said. “They also have large litters, so there’s a lot of puppies being born.”
Shelter Trainer Karen Owens said pit bulls are often the last to be adopted because of the bad reputation they have.
“The most misconceptions we hear at animal care and control are that people are concerned about aggression and are concerned about the dog being around their children, their concerned about a pit bull being a round their other dogs,” she said. “But In general they're very friendly and very affectionate and very playful and very energetic."
The Nylabowl Facebook vote and adoption promotion will run through the day of the Superbowl on Sunday, Feb. 2.
