The North Carolina Department of Transportation says in a month and a half part of a 7-mile widening project on Interstate 85 in Concord should be wrapping up. The DOT plans to open the interstate from four lanes to eight lanes from exits 49-54 by the end of February. The agency says the remaining mile and a half just past exit 55 should be opened to eight lanes by May.
Drivers are ready for the construction, which has lasted two and a half years, to end.
Johnny Warren says, “It’s pretty tough in this area with all the construction going on. It’s pretty tight, and it can be dangerous too.”
Montina Heiligh says, “It’s a big mess out there. It’s ridiculous. It really is.”
People who live and work in the area say the traffic relief is much needed in the area, especially given how crowded the interstate is around Concord Mills.
David Hansford says, “We know something this complex takes a lot of time, but it will be worth it once it’s finished.”
Warren says, “The sooner, the better. If they could open up longer (a longer stretch), that’d be great, but the sooner, the better.”
