Food stamps have been a hot issue in North Carolina recently, and comments from a U.S. Senate candidate's 2013 interview may have added fuel to the fire. Republican Candidate Greg Brannon compared the federal program to slavery in a recently unearthed interview from last October.
The interview was posted on the Motherjones.com Tuesday. Brannon, a Tea Party member, also called for the Department of Agriculture to be abolished at the federal level.
"We're taking our plunder, that's taken from us as individuals…and the government is now keeping itself in power by giving these goodies away," Brannon said.
"The answer is the Department of Agriculture should go away at the federal level. And now 80 percent of the farm bill was food stamps. That enslaves people. What you want to do, it's crazy but it's true, teach people to fish instead of giving them fish. When you're at the behest of somebody else, you are actually a slavery to them...That kind of charity does not make people freer."
North Carolina has recently come under fire from the federal government for its slow response to Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program (SNAP) applications and re-certifications. Current polls have Brannon trailing fellow Republican candidate Thom Tillis, but with a narrow lead over incumbent Democratic Senator Kay Hagan.
A call to Brannon’s Campaign was not immediately returned. Stay tuned to www.myfoxcarolinas.com for more info.
