City leaders have given the green light for a sidewalk project on West Tyvola Road, just off Billy Graham Parkway.
That’s the stretch of road where city leaders say two kids died nearly two years ago while walking to a nearby day care center, because there were no sidewalks and they had to walk on the road.
“It’s a very dangerous road. By this time something should have been done,” said Fernando Steele.
For the last two years, a make shift memorial on West Tyvola road reminds neighbors of a tragic accident.
“That’s two young lives - how many more are we going to have before something happens,” said Steele.
Neighbors say it was at this intersection when a truck crashed and killed two kids. They say they are frustrated that there is no sidewalk on this stretch of the road.
“This man was doing the best he can and now his kids are gone,” said Steele.
Fernando Steele works just down the street from the crash site. “It would have helped if they had sidewalks. They needed them yesterday.”
Steele says many drivers take that road as a shortcut to avoid traffic. “There are no sidewalks. People walk and have to walk to catch the bus. There are cars that use it as a shortcut. They are coming in fast. A sidewalk is so needed.”
City leaders approved funding for the sidewalk Monday night.
While the new sidewalks will hopefully reduce accident, Steele says it comes at the cost of two lives. “Could this have been prevented - yes!”
The sidewalks should be installed by summer. Funding for this sidewalk project will come from another road project that had some surplus.
