City Leaders Prep Roads For Winter Weather

Posted: Updated:
City leaders unveiled their snow and ice control plan Monday night and how they'd dispatch crews just in case conditions worsened.

Their first priority is to make sure key employment areas and major roads, especially ones that lead to schools and hospitals are accessible.

Crews don’t wait until cold nights like tonight to get ready---they start training in July for employees and check all equipment.

Crews from both the Charlotte Department of Transportation and state DOT treated bridges, culverts and other major highways---just in case of black ice.

“You will see bridges freeze first or culverts where there is water or shaded. Anything you see that's shiny will be more difficult to maneuver through,” said Jen Thompson with the NCDOT.

Sometimes crews use calcium chloride because the salt brine mixture only works until about 18 degrees.

So with temperatures dropping as we speak---crews are asking that if you do drive to drive slowly, and look for patches of ice. If your car does skid, don't slam the brakes, but swerve towards that direction. And if you notice any icy road conditions, you can call char-meck 311.
