Pike Nurseries' Melodie McDanal shares how you can add bright, brilliant color and interest for winter with shrubs.

Shrubs with Winter Interest

When it's cold out, we tend to long for spring and all the beauty that it brings; but, winter landscapes can be surprisingly colorful and exciting when filled with plants that really shine in the cold weather. Here are some shrubs that bring interesting color, textures and fragrances to the yard.

• Witch Hazel:

o A deciduous shrub that adds a brilliant splash of color with fragrant flowers that appear in shades of red, orange and yellow.

• Edgeworthia:

o Grown for the fragrant flowers that grow on the branch tips and look like little suns.

o The flowers open in later winter around February.

• Walking Stick ‘Harry Lauder's':

o A unique deciduous shrub with interesting gnarled and twisted branches.

o Its showy greenish-yellow catkins brighten up any winter scene.

• Winter Daphne:

o A mounding evergreen shrub with glossy green foliage.

o Its pale pink or white flowers bloom from January to March.

• Camellias:

o The South is the heart of camellia country.

o Great in container gardens

o Remarkable range of color, form and size

o Deep lustrous green foliage

o Best if left totally alone

• Mini Conifers

o Dwarf Alberta Spruce

    -Dense green needles soft to touch

    -Excellent as a container plant

o Winterberry

    -Erect moderate sized shrub with dense branches that form a zig-zag pattern.

    -Red berries are good provided of wildlife

• General Planting and Cold Weather Tips

o In Georgia you can plant year-round

o Planting now gives the roots time to establish all spring before the summer heats arrives

o Now is a great time to refresh your landscape with mulch. Apply 2-3 inch layer.

o Water, water, water: you should water containers before a hard freeze and after the freeze. The added moisture will allow the plants to tolerate the cold and bounce back to life.

o Don't worry if you're plants are droopy the day after a deep freeze. Give them time and they will usually spring back to life.
