The History Behind #KeepPounding -

A look back at Sam Mills' influence on the Carolina Panthers

The History Behind #KeepPounding

Posted: Updated:
Charlotte, NC - "Keep Pounding" stems from the legacy of former Panthers linebacker Sam Mills, who made a moving speech before a Panthers playoff game against the Dallas Cowboys in 2003.

One speech. 29 words. From a man who'd been fighting intestinal cancer for months.

"When I found out I had cancer, there were two things I could do," Mills told the team. "Quit, or keep pounding. I'm a fighter," Mills said. "I kept pounding. You're fighters, too," he told the team. "Keep pounding!"

Carolina beat the Cowboys that day, and went on to Super Bowl XXXVIII. Mills passed away in 2005, but ever since, the speech has lived on in Panthers lore.
