Players and coaches happy for their D-Coordinator, hopeful he gets a chance

Panthers embrace McDermott's Candidacy for Head Coaching Gigs

Posted: Updated:
Charlotte, NC - Panthers defensive coordinator Sean McDermott is a leading candidate for at least one head coach opening. That fact has many of his players and fellow coaches happy for him.

"So excited for him," Panthers free safety Mike Mitchell says. "Just for the man he is, the type of family man, and the coach that he is. I mean, he's one of the better defensive coordinators in the league."

For that reason, McDermott is receiving a lot of attention, as a possible head coaching candidate. McDermott will interview this weekend for the open Washington Redskins job.

McDermott has manned the helm of the Carolina Panthers defense for the past three seasons. This year, McDermott's defense has been a special unit, ranking second in the NFL in total defense and points allowed per game.

"He's done a great job here, as a coordinator," Panthers head coach Ron Rivera says. "You look at where we started, and where we are right now, he's done a great job.  The body of work speaks for itself."

"He came to us like a man," Greg Hardy said. "Like a coach. Like a mentor. Like he's supposed to. We're proud of him, you know. This is what comes with greatness."

McDermott has been with the Panthers for all three of Rivera's seasons in Carolina. Rivera says he -- as well as GM Dave Gettleman -- has one piece of advice for him:

"You only get one chance to make a first impression," Rivera says. "So be prepared. You know, and I think going forward, that'll be one of the things that Sean does, is just be prepared."
