Local Belk stores will help women over the age of 40, by giving free mammogram screenings starting Wednesday, Jan. 2, through Saturday, Jan. 4.
“Last year more than 4,000 women were screened throughout North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee,” said Charlotte Radiology Project Center Specialist Shawna Plate.
The mammograms will be given through the BelkGives on the Go Mobile Mammography Center, which is a 39-foot-long, screening center on wheels.
The mobile center is scheduled to make stops at Carolina Place, Northlake and SouthPark Malls. Appointments start as early as 9:15 a.m. and are accepted before or during the event. Walk-ins are welcome, provided there are openings after scheduled appointments.
Screening exams are performed by female mammography certified technologists, and board certified radiologists who specialize in breast imaging. The results are kept confidential and will be sent to patients and their primary care physician.
“The program started January 2013 and since then 10 cancers have been diagnosed as a result of the screening program,” said Plate.
