While most people are preparing for their individual New Year’s Eve plans, the City of Charlotte is focused on keeping the masses safe. The city’s “First Night” New Year’s Eve celebration has been declared an “Extraordinary Event” by City Manager Ron Carlee, which means there will be restrictions on many objects during the celebration – including normal, everyday items.
Not only will fireworks, smoke bombs and paint guns be banned, but items like backpacks, duffel bags and coolers will also be prohibited during the celebration, which will take place uptown at Romare Bearden Park.
According to a release, the Extraordinary Event Ordinance's purpose is to allow law enforcement to identify risks or individuals intent on doing harm at major events.
“The ordinance should not affect the normal way of life for law abiding citizens,” the document states.
