A 71-year-old man from Belmont, NC is sharing his gift for music with others. Butch Ziegler released a holiday Christmas album with 7 songs. He’s a resident of Holy Angels and has performed for guests for the past 15 years.
“He plays the piano everyday and plays for all the home. And depending on the season, he plays specific to that,” said musical therapist Jessica Gutierrez.
Ziegler plays everything from classical music to jazz and started playing the piano at just 4-years-old.
“He can play classical, Christmas music, rock music, Broadway and musicals. He doesn’t know things from the 2000’s – and things like from Wicked,” said Gutierrez.
Ziegler has also played for former first lady Barbara Bush. But things have not always been so rosy for the pianist.
“He’s diagnosed with autism and a savant. Sometimes people who have autism have a talent and his is piano and an incredible memory. He is legally blind and can play any song he’s heard only once,” said Gutierrez.
Now that he has a CD under his belt, he hopes to inspire others.
“An applause isn’t expected but it’s appreciated. I think it’s beautiful that he’s so willing to share his music. I think he’s very humble but also proud,” said Gutierrez.
You can buy a CD for $10 from Holy Angels.
