The Carolina Panthers needed a bounce back win. They got exactly that on Sunday, in a 30-20 win over the New York Jets.
The Panthers defense and special teams slammed the door shut in the second half. A blocked punt by Jason Williams led to a Mike Tolbert touchdown run, giving Carolina a 23-13 lead. Then Captain Munnerlyn's interception returned for a touchdown extended the Panthers lead to 30-13.
The Jets did threaten in the second half, closing within 3. Ron Rivera gambled on a 4th & 2 from the Jets 14, and the Panthers could not convert. On the ensuing Jets possession, New York drove 86 yards in 9 plays, capping the drive with a Sheldon Richardson touchdown run from a yard out, cutting the Panthers lead to 16-13.
The only touchdown of the first half came on a misdirection screen play, from Newton to Williams. Newton pumped to his left, wheeled around and hit Williams, who was by his lonesome on the right side. Williams took it 72 yards for the touchdown, giving Carolina a 13-6 lead.
The Jets scored a fourth quarter touchdown, to trim the margin. Geno Smith hit Jeff Cumberland on an 8-yard touchdown pass, to provide the final margin.
With the win, the Panthers improve to 10-4 on the year. Thanks to the New Orleans Saints' loss to the St. Louis Rams, the Saints and Panthers are now tied atop the NFC South. Both teams are 10-4, heading into their rematch on Sunday, December 22nd, at Bank of America Stadium. You can see that game on Fox46 Carolinas.
