Members of the Gay Lesbian Straight Education Network (GLSEN) distributed “Safe Space Kits" at East Mecklenburg High School on Wednesday. The kits were given to middle and high school teachers, which will be used as a guide to educate teachers on the BLIGHT community.

“The packets we put in schools are to give students a resource kit to help the LGBT students feel safe in classrooms,” said Rodney Tucker, Executive Director of Time Out Youth Center.

The kit is a tool for educators to build support for vulnerable students and reduce anti-LGBT name-calling, bullying and harassment in their school.

“Educators can use the kit to do self-development or professional development,” said Micah Johnson, Director of School Outreach for Time Out Youth.

Each kit will contain 10 Safe Space stickers, two posters, a 42 page guide that will give concrete strategies for supporting LGBT students, and more.

Tucker said that all middle and high school in the state have the kits. The Time Out Youth Center partners with CMS to do training and consultation on LGBT issues.

“Having Safe Space Kits available allows us to build strong and effective partnerships with local school administrators seeking to improve school climate," Tucker said.

GLSEN hopes to have a Safe Space Kit to every middle and high school in the United States by the end of 2013.
