Tony Stewart hasn’t been behind the wheel in months, but it’s clear he still on the minds of many NASCAR fans. NASCAR announced on Tuesday that the three-time Sprint Cup Series champion has been selected to appear on the cover of its official video game, NASCAR ’14.
After sitting out most of last season after breaking his leg at Southern Iowa in August, Stewart was excited about the win.
“Being selected by the fans to be on the cover of NASCAR ‘14 is a huge honor,” said Stewart, co-owner and driver for Stewart-Haas Racing. “It’s been a long couple of months, but my fans’ passion has been one of the driving factors in helping me rehab and my ability to prepare for returning to the race car in February.”
Stewart received over 700,000 votes in the contest, besting Jeff Gordon. The contest was voted on by fans exclusively on Facebook.
“In the midst of a racing season cut short by injury, the number of fans who voted for Tony speaks volumes about the excitement surrounding his return,” said Blake Davidson, NASCAR vice president of licensing and consumer products.
The game will be available for Xbox and Playstation console systems. The game is slated for an early 2014 release.
