UGA receives research grant for political records

Posted: Updated:

ATHENS, Ga. (AP) - The University of Georgia has received a nearly $59,000 research grant to prepare records once kept by the Democratic Party of Georgia and the Georgia Republican Party.

The grant was awarded to the university's Richard B. Russell Library for Political Research and Studies and will pay for an archivist to perform detailed processing and basic preservation on the records which date back to 1975 for the Democratic Party and 1981 for the Georgia GOP.

Officials say the one-year project will make the records available to researchers for the first time.

Professor Charles Bullock says the party records have important implications for historians and political scientists and "cover the period in which Georgia has transitioned from one of the nation's most solidly blue states to a scarlet one."
