A group at Alpine Village Retirement Community has taken extreme couponing to a new level. Every Tuesday afternoon, they gather to clip coupons in the community clubhouse – but they don’t use them for themselves; they send them overseas to the troops. They are called the Troopons.
“We decided to do something that had some meaning to it,” said Troopons member Carla Macartney.
Any manufacturers coupons found in your Sunday paper or daily coupon book can be used at the commissaries overseas, even six months after the coupons expiration date.
They send them coupons for everyday things, from deodorant to diapers to milk.
“Many people don’t realize that that this is a project that they can do,” said Troopon coordinator Martha Henderson.
In one Charlotte Observer Sunday paper, you will often find more than $150 worth of coupons. Every two weeks, after the coupons have been sorted, they mail over ten pounds of coupons that they have cut.
In the last year, they have sent over $500,000 worth of coupons.
The military has kept track of their efforts. An organization called “Support our Troops” organizes all the Troopons around the country and sent them a letter saying that they are saving families over $150 a month.
“You can’t help but wonder if it is used and if it’s appreciated and that was kind of awesome,” said Macartney.
If you would like to send coupons overseas, you can mail the coupons to Support Our Troops. P.O. Box 70. Daytona Beach, Fl 32115.
