Concord, NC -
When Ron Knight retired 3 years ago, he got bored. So he decided to start a new hobby. That hobby turned into a business that is also keeping alive a dying art. Ron is known as The Bearman, and he makes beautiful wood sculptures by carving them with a chainsaw.
"I have a cabin up in the mountains up North, and I would see these sculptures the mountain men made," Knight said. "But they wouldn't teach me how to do it, because they want to keep it in their families. So, I went home and decided to teach myself how to do it."
After 6 months, Knight was invited to a wood carving competition. He came in 5th place. At the next competition, he took 1st place.
He showed some of his work to a woman who ran a crafts fair in Boone. She liked what she saw and Knight started selling his works through her.
Knight's workshop is set up in his backyard at his home in Concord. Walk into the backyard and you see piles of wood, totem poles, sculptures, and a chain saw.
"I am always working, working to get better," Knight said. "Unless I am traveling, or going to church, I am always back here working on getting better."
