FOX 29 Puts Dirty Make-Up Bags Under Microscope

Expiration dates are a big thing for the FDA but one expiration date they don't regulate is for that make-up you wear and it can be pretty scary stuff.

So FOX 29's Joyce Evans put the most used and abused TV makeup under the microscope.

We apply it in a flash, holding onto our favs forever, down to the last drop or crumb.

However, how old is that mascara you're still brushing on? How clean are those fingers you're dabbing in there? What other tasty treats are you rolling out onto your lips? When's the last time you switched out of that bag you cram everything into?

FOX 29's executive producer Megan Duncan bravely handed over her makeup bag, and we "gathered" some old cosmetics from others in our newsroom, including that of our resident "tough guy," investigative reporter Jeff Cole.

We then took this bag and more straight to a lab. You won't believe what's lurking inside.

EMSL microbiologists Farbod Nekouei and Manisha Shah go to work swabbing, isolating for testing to see what's inside.

"When the cosmetic starts getting older, the preservative starts wearing off and the bacteria starts growing back up," said Dr. Nekouei. The bacteria include what's found growing on old makeup like Joyce's liquid eyeliner.

"They're called Gram Positive Bacteria," said Dr. Nekouei.

On Jamie's brow brush, there were "about 4 colonies of Micrococcus Luteus."

On Lee's brush and Kerry's mascara, there were "Staphylococcus Epidermidis - that's actually a skin bacteria."

While these may look and sound ugly, Farbod says that none is a serious threat to a healthy person, including what's inside Megan's dirty little bag.

"The highest amount we did have was Megan's bag," said Dr. Nekouei.

242 colonies of dirt, nothing he says that will hurt her.

"I recommend she throw it away and get a new bag," Dr. Nekouei still said.

Eye Irritation and Skin Reactions, for some people, may actually be caused by the preservatives and other ingredients inside their cosmetics.

It's always a good idea to check with your dermatologist.
