Are the Panthers Super Bowl Contenders in 2013? Rivera Says Not Yet

Posted: Updated:
Charlotte, NC - The Carolina Panthers are contenders for Super Bowl XLVIII.

That's a statement you can make with a straight face, Tuesday morning.

But it's not a statement that Ron Rivera is making. Not right now, anyway.

"No," Rivera said, when asked if his team was on a short list of Super Bowl contenders. "We're getting ready for Miami. And I mean it. That's how we're gonna focus it. We're not gonna get ahead of ourselves. We're gonna take it one game at a time."

"It's one game at a time," Rivera said, regarding his team looking at possibilities of winning the NFC South, or earning a bye week in the playoffs. "So when that time comes, that's when we'll start to focus in on that.

"It's not like I'm trying to brush anybody off, but that's how I want to approach it. I want to try to do everything I can to make sure we stay focused on the task at hand, and that's taking care of our own business, and that starts with the very next game."

Rivera did, however, discuss the importance of the Panthers win on Monday night.

"One of the two," Rivera said, when asked if the victory over the Patriots was the biggest of the season. "You know, the San Francisco game was as big as it gets, because it was a win against a very good team on the road. This win (against the Patriots) was very big because it was against a good team, at home. And so, that's how I rank 'em. They're right there on equal footing."
